Calculate how much yarn (yards, meters, and skeins) you need for blankets, sweaters, scarves, hats, and shawls for both knitting and crochet.
(2319 Meters) · Crochet allowance applied
Crochet creates stitches formed with loops wrapped around the shaft of the hook (like double and treble crochets), creating thicker, denser fabric. On average, crochet uses approximately 25% to 30% more yardage than stockinette knitting for the exact same surface area.
A standard throw blanket (50" x 60") using medium worsted weight yarn typically requires 1,500 to 2,000 yards of yarn. If each skein contains 200 yards, you will need 8 to 10 skeins.
A dye lot is a number assigned by yarn manufacturers to a batch of yarn dyed together in the same vat. Even with identical color recipes, different dye lot batches can have slight tonal differences that will show up as visible stripes on finished blankets or sweaters.
Thinner yarns (like lace and fingering) have significantly more yards per 100 grams (400-800+ yards) but require smaller needles/hooks and more stitches. Chunky and bulky yarns have fewer yards per skein (80-130 yards) but work up quickly with fewer total stitches.
