Calculate exact cut lengths, strip counts, and yardage for single or multi-layer quilt borders. Supports butted corners, mitered corners, and prevents wavy quilt edges.
Never measure along the raw edge of your quilt top, as edges stretch easily. Always measure your quilt through the center horizontally and vertically, cut your border strips to that exact measurement, pin at midpoints and corners, and ease any fullness before sewing.
Standard quilting uses a 1/4" seam allowance. Because a border strip is sewn on one side and has another border (or binding) attached to the other, we add 1/2" (0.5") total to the finished width to get the exact cut width.
Butted borders use square 90-degree cuts where side strips are sewn first, and top/bottom strips extend to cover them (or vice versa). Mitered borders meet at a 45-degree diagonal angle in each corner, requiring strips cut slightly longer than the quilt edges.
Our calculator automatically builds each border outward from the previous layer, calculating the expanded perimeter, strip count from usable WOF (40"), and yardage for up to 4 border layers simultaneously.
